Single Family House 4,900 Square Feet
Sited on an 18-acre pastoral landscape overlooking Cherry Hill Farm on the outskirts of Charlottesville, Virginia, House in a Clearing is a country house with dignity. Designed to embrace the verdant landscape visible in every direction, three simple gabled wings converge in the form of a “Y”.
Simultaneously reaching out and establishing a center as a still point of retreat, three distinct landscape orientations are framed: the entry court (the near view), the adjacent meadow (the middle view), and the mountains beyond (the far view).
Durable materials define the structure. The exterior is clad in local brick with a traditional lime wash finish, creating a textured effect that reads less like stacked units and more like a fabric stretched taut. The gabled roofs are sheathed in standing seam copper. Inside, a minimal palette of white oak and muted stone enhances the abundant natural light and highlights the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
