Nestled in the rolling hills of Marin County, 30 miles north of San Francisco, the community of Nicasio feels far removed from the city, surrounded by grassy meadows and towering redwoods. The House in a Meadow sits near the base of a 65-acre hillside site, facing west in a clearing adjacent to an existing mid-century main house. With site development limited by planning codes, the challenge of the project was how to fit the full program of a guest and pool house within the limited footprint of an existing structure.

Taking full advantage of the area’s mild climate, traditional indoor living, dining, and kitchen spaces were relocated outdoors beneath a large pergola. Interior circulation was minimized and shifted to a long porch running along the façade, with a series of doors providing direct access from the exterior to bedrooms, changing rooms, and living spaces.

The architectural language builds on the mid-century character of the existing house, featuring a simple exposed post-and-beam structure clad in natural cedar. The pool patio’s natural flagstone surface extends seamlessly into the interior, creating continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. The pergola mirrors the house's design with a similar post-and-beam structure, complemented by large corten standing seam roof overhangs.
