Single Family House
7,600 Square Feet
At the edge of the Teton National Forest, among vast swaths of spruce and fir that blanket the Teton Range, a new 7,600 s.f. residence will be carefully sited within a vibrant stand of Aspen trees.
The L-shaped massing of the house follows the contours of a clearing, to preserve the existing aspens. The house rises above the surrounding hillside to offer expansive views toward the Teton Range and Snake River valley below.
In contrast to the weight of stacked stone that grounds the house, the upper floor and roof are tautly wrapped in thin-plate corten steel. This upper level, with its taut steel and large floor-to-ceiling windows, has a perceivable lightness. Its construction is refined relative to the roughness of the stone beneath it. Yet together both of these raw natural materials - the stone and the iron oxide of the weathered steel - are a direct reflection of this site and its long geological history.
Boulders made of granite and gneiss dot the surrounding landscape. Like an aggregation of these hard, igneous rocks, the ground floor of the house is formed from a stacking of local rubble stone.
As it ages over time, the house will have a presence in the landscape that embodies both the roughness and beauty of its place among the aspens.
