Single Family Home
3,200 Square Feet
Located in the Mission District—an evolving neighborhood of family homes and light industrial spaces—Mission House was designed in close collaboration with its clients, a roboticist and an interaction designer. In addition to the traditional elements of a home, the design incorporates a maker space and workshop, tailored to adapt and grow alongside the family.
The façade reinterprets the classic Bay window, a feature ubiquitous throughout San Francisco, with a minimalist form clad in tightly spaced 1x3 cedar battens. The project is built within the shell of a former structure, with the new construction intentionally exposing tectonic joints where old and new meet.
A dark exterior color and a restrained material palette allow the house to blend into its surroundings while asserting a quiet, iconic presence in this transitioning neighborhood.
