Single Family Renovation & Addition
10,000 Square Feet
True to its name, the Interlace House intricately weaves together two households, two families, and two buildings into a unified and harmonious whole. Commissioned by a recently blended family—each spouse bringing three children, for a total of three girls and three boys—the project aimed to create a home spacious enough for a family of eight, yet warm and inviting enough to foster a strong domestic spirit.
The project began with an existing Neo-Georgian brick house nestled on a sprawling property in the rolling horse country of Charlottesville, Virginia. While the home offered generously sized rooms, its layout of windows and porches left the interior feeling dark and disconnected from the picturesque natural surroundings.
While the addition complements the original house with matching whitewashed brick, it adopts a modern architectural language. Flat roofs with deep overhangs provide shade from the southern sun, while large square windows frame the bucolic natural landscape, creating a thoughtful connection between indoors and outdoors.
Programmatically, the clients sought to add new children’s bedrooms, a primary suite, and a kitchen and dining area that would flow seamlessly into a new covered porch overlooking the existing pool. Most importantly, they envisioned a “Saturday Room”—a relaxed, family-centered space designed for unplugged weekend gatherings and quality time together.
